I found it's hard to get my foot down there (on 20er?) while stepping towards the front I can easily balance with my toes and heel.

definetely at end of reach for me when i step to the down of the wheel there :) your way looks like it puts use of the pedal in a cool way. my pedal touching was kinda unintended, think i got a few without pedal touch too
