Throw back to Shaun J and the forum's in the 2000's. Anyone know the relevance of what was being discussed around this clip and this type of trick at the time?

The first varial-spin-flip trick?

Good thinking Jun. Not the reference though! Looking to some of the riders from way back when to know this one 😉

It's was a discussion of what was classed as "clean" at the time. Shaun decided that landing seat out fakie with 1 hop counted as clean. (TBH this clip is sick and would count as clean!) However would look nicer without the hop 😅

no discussion is necessary the answer is clear, nowadays clean tricks and combos is ride like @Ivar

For me, clean is without any correction hop. But even without hop it does not have to be clean, it can still be sketchy...for a clean I want it to look effortless or intended not like that you barely landed it. But it also depends on my proficiency with certain trick, if I just started to land it, one hop will mean clean for me (for the time being).

yeah I agree with Pavel. I have a really high standard for labeling my tricks as clean. I usually try to land it until I feel like I really got it, or until it's becoming so annoying to get right it's ruining my ride lol. Steezy is different though. I think steezy is more subjective and not a perfect match with clean. Sometimes things that aren't clean can be really steezy imo

Agree, no unnecessary hop isn't the only criterion but just the first. I think Chris H's recent clips of roll combos are truely clean examples. Done in an average pace with proper pauses between, and he barely swings arm for balance. I was so shocked first time watching it.

I must agree regarding clean not being just about no hops. I'll often land things without hops numerous times before I'm happy it was clean. I also completely agree regarding style/steeze being seperate and not entirely linked to cleanliness. Some riders have some hops naturally but ooze steeze/style and it's fine. However in some people's riding hops look ugly. Myself - for anything filmed I always take the time to land it as clean as I can depending on difficulty that might be with no hops, minimal hops or as close to perfect and effortless as I can.

I've always liked this topic of discussion and the "consistency" videos by Shaun J and Luke C's response back in the day were great examples of different versions of cleanliness/style and consistency. (must say I preferred Luke's and that has come across to want slopestyle street is in a perfect competition run these days!)

Lovely to read what you all think about that! Yea i also think it varies depending on difficulty or intention with that trick. And sometimes a good save or effortlessly making the trick work despitesketch is so much more fun to see than perfect execution from the start
